Recommended Gear

Sometimes the right gear can make all the difference. Anyone who has ever worn the wrong shoes on a hike will know the importance investing in good quality kit. But – you also don’t want to spend half your travel budget on kit. Check out our recommendations and strike a balance between purchasing for good quality and affordable gear.

A little about me

Ok, so I’m going to be honest – all I want to do is travel. I’m happiest when I’m exploring somewhere new with my family. Living out of a few bags, discovering new places, flavours and cultures, and then hitting the road to do it all again the following day. I love the memories that we create together. The look of pure joy on my daughter’s face when she is discovering something new fills this Mamma’s heart with happiness and love.

Growing-up, I was extremely lucky. When I was four, my dad accepted a job in Central America that should have only lasted 6 months – 10 years later, we were still living abroad. I had an adventurous childhood, filled with jungle treks, snorkelling, and lots of travel. I developed a passion for protecting nature and a deep respect for other people’s history and culture. These experiences fuelled my interests and passions. As an adult, I focused my career on trying to make the world a better place. I worked in international development and I worked with children by creating educational resources designed to widen their understanding of world issues.

I want to pass this passion down to my daughter. I live in England, so weekend jungle treks are not so easy to come by. However, there are so many adventures to be had all around us.

Why did I start Adventurous Kids Travel?

When I was pregnant, my husband and I went on a “Baby Moon” to the Jurassic Coast, one of our favourite places in Britain. As we searched for ammonites and walked along the coast, I dreamt about bringing our daughter there one day. I pictured her looking for fossils, splashing her feet in the water, and naming dinosaurs over a delicious dinner.

I started to imagine all of the activities I would create to excite her about dinosaurs and the Jurassic Period. After all, I had spent years creating activities for other people’s children – it would be a joy to use those skills for my own child. I also knew I would not stop at just a few dinosaur related activities. I knew that I would want us to spend as much time as possible exploring the world around us. That I would want to develop activities and games that would spark her curiosity outside the classroom in order to improve her engagement and performance inside the classroom.

I also realised how much work this would be. In that moment a seed was planted in my mind, “maybe I could start a blog so that could share these resources with other parents!”. Four years later (once I had emerged from “Baby Land”) Adventurous Kids Travel was born. This blog is for you adventurous Mamma, I hope that you and your family create wonderful memories together.
