It’s a half-term like no other! After weeks of home-schooling, the entire family has been looking forward to a well-deserved break. However, Lockdown rules probably mean that your usual go-to half-term activities are currently not permitted.

This does not mean that you can’t have fun and create some amazing family memories. Go outdoors, stretch those legs, breath in fresh air and explore your local area.

Below are 10 adventurous activities for your family to try out during the February half-term:

1) Discover a new trail and go exploring – Odds are you won’t have to go very far to explore new ground. Talk to friends, search local groups on Social Media, or pull-up a map of your local area, and look around for a new trail that you haven’t explored before.  Then throw on your wellies and go exploring. During your walk, look out for birds (can you name any?), animal tracks (can you guess which animals created these?) and most exciting of all, look out for early signs of Spring!

2) Wake up early and watch the sunrise – Although you are probably hoping for a lie-in, odds are the kids will be up early and full of energy. Why not turn this into an adventure? There is something magical about watching a new day be born.  Wake the kids up early with hot-chocolates (don’t forget the marshmallows) and watch the sunrise together. Make it a little extra special and drive somewhere you will be able to get a clear view of the sunrise (and take your hot chocolates with you in a flask!).

3) Go on a virtual museum tour – Just because we can’t travel at the moment, it doesn’t mean that we have to stop exploring the world. From the Louvre in France to the Natural History Museum in London, or the Smithsonian Museums in the United States, museums everywhere have set-up virtual tours you can enjoy from home. Top tip – save this one for a rainy day!

4) Go Geocaching – Who doesn’t love a good treasure hunt? Geocaching is a treasure hunt where you insert coordinates into a GPS device to help you find a “cache”. The cache is usually a hidden box with swappable treasure inside, so remember to take a small toy with you to swap for a toy in the cache. You can use the GPS on your smartphone. There are apps which enable your phone’s GPS to interact with the Geocaching website. Get started by visiting the Geocaching website here and register (for free).

5) Go star gazing – Stay up late and go stargazing. On a clear night, find somewhere that is free of light pollution and look up at the stars. Use a stargazing app to help you identify the stars and the constellations. Oh and don’t forget the hot chocolates!

6) Get creative – Go on a walk and gather interesting sticks, leaves, stones etc. and transform these into fun crafts. Find craft ideas here

7) Go (mock) camping – Although we are currently in Lockdown, you can still have fun in a tent. Set up the tent in your garden (if you have one and weather permitting) or even in your house! Have campout food for dinner (such as hotdogs or burgers) sing songs, and tell spooky stories.

8)  Try pancakes from around the world – Celebrate Pancake Day by learning how these are eaten around the world.  Search for inspiration here and try some of these new flavours. Which was your favourite?

9) Go on a colour scavenger hunt – Asign a different colour to each family member and go for a walk. Which items can you spot in your colour? Write it down on a list or take photographs. When you get back home compare your items.

10) Visit a virtual Zoo – Zoos around the world are currently closed, but many have found a way to share their animals with us. You can either watch a virtual Zoo session such as this one at Chester Zoo or watch ‘live- cams’ of their enclosures such as these ones at the San Diego Zoo.

This is your family’s opportunity to explore your local area. Have a wonderful time together, make memories, take photos and enjoy the outdoors.

Safety First: Supervise your children at all times, their safety is your responsibility. Remember to remain Covid safe – take your masks and hand sanitiser with you and follow all Lockdown rules.
